FLUTE CATALOG

I build my flutes from exquisite, top quality, eastern red (aromatic) cedar, walnut and cherry woods. All of my flutes use the superior one piece drilled construction method. This gives you a more solid flute, without any delamination concerns that some of the two piece flutes face. Drilling is also very accurate, in as much as I can go right down the center of a flute, +/- .002 inch. That’s half the thickness of a dollar bill! It also makes for a prettier flute, without the glue lines. All of our concert flutes also have a precision nest under the bird. The nest enhances the performance by giving you a really alive present voice that can handle big breath extremes. It’s really hard to overblow these flutes even with a heavy vibrato.

Our flutes use an extended range pentatonic tuning. This is sometimes called a Mode 1-Mode 4 tuning. They have a total of 15 notes, covering an octave plus a minor third. They also have a 12 tone chromatic octave within the minor pentatonic.

Concert Flutes

The concert flutes feature an extremely clear, clean and loud voice. These are the famous flutes that you hear on many of the albums. The most common and famous of this group is the G minor. The G minor is a relative Bb major, which is an orchestral pitch instrument. Not only is it a sweet sounding solo flute, but it does an outstanding job of accompanying many other instruments. It’s my personal flute of choice because of its versatility. The F# minor is the scale I think of as being most traditional. It is also often heard on many albums. It’s that hauntingly beautiful solo flute often heard in a canyon setting. The A minor is a higher pitch, easier to reach, happy, dancing kind of scale. The F# and E minor are a slightly larger, 1″ bore, and have big, round mellow voices. The E in particular is often used accompanying guitars. The D minor and C minor base have a rich, very low voice.
