Flute Catalog

I build my flutes from exquisite, top quality, eastern red (aromatic) cedar, walnut and cherry woods. All of my flutes use the superior one piece drilled construction method. This gives you a more solid flute, without any delamination concerns that some of the two piece flutes face. Drilling is also very accurate, in as much as I can go right down the center of a flute, +/- .002 inch. That's half the thickness of a dollar bill! It also makes for a prettier flute, without the glue lines. All of our concert flutes also have a gold anodized nest under the bird. The nest enhances the performance by giving you a really alive present voice that can handle big breath extremes. It's really hard to overblow these flutes even with a heavy vibrato. I'll occasionally build a few flutes from exotic woods, such as tulipwood, cocobolo, Hawaiian koa, zebrawood, padauk, East Indian rosewood, African blackwood, pink ivory, olivewood, ebony, bocote, mesquite, bois d'arc, bois de rose, shedua and others. If interested, please inquire.

Our flutes use an extended range pentatonic tuning. This is sometimes called a Mode 1-Mode 4 tuning. They have a total of 15 notes, covering an octave plus a minor third. They also have a 12 tone chromatic octave within the minor pentatonic.

Concert Flutes

The concert flutes feature an extremely clear, clean and loud voice. These are the famous flutes that you hear on many of the albums. The most common and famous of this group is the G minor. The G minor is a relative Bb major, which is an orchestral pitch instrument. Not only is it a sweet sounding solo flute, but it does an outstanding job of accompanying many other instruments. It's my personal flute of choice because of its versatility. The F# minor is the scale I think of as being most traditional. It is also often heard on many albums. It's that hauntingly beautiful solo flute often heard in a canyon setting. The A minor is a higher pitch, easier to reach, happy, dancing kind of scale. The E and D# minors are a slightly larger, 1" bore, and have big, round mellow voices. The E in particular is often used accompanying guitars. The D minor and C minor base have a rich, very low voice.

Anasazi Style Flutes

Our Anasazi style flutes are reproductions of the “cave” flutes found in Northeastern Arizona on an expedition led by Earl H Morris of the Carnegie Institute of Washington in 1931. His team unearthed thousands of artifacts, among them flutes constructed between 620 and 670 AD. They were later transferred from the Institute to the Arizona State Museum in Tucson in January of 1957. These flutes were made from box elder, a hardwood. They are rim blown, 6 hole, multi-octave instruments. These are very challenging instruments to learn to play, but well worth the results. Some will spend days and/or weeks getting their first sound. I think of it, however, as learning to ride a bicycle, whereby once you’ve gained the skill, you will always have it. Our reproductions are exact, true to the small 3/4" bore, 1/8” thin wall design, built in hardwoods. I haven’t changed the tuning at all, so these are going to give you the sounds heard hundreds of years ago. The small diameter, thin wall design is very difficult for modern flute makers to build. I can only imagine the challenge the cave dwellers faced in building these flutes some 1200 years ago. Our authentic 3/4” bore and 1” diameter will fit your chin and lips better than the larger bore flutes. Also, our smaller bore flute reaches the upper octaves easier. Our authentic 1/8” thin wall has a greater resonance than the large bore flutes. We also shape our rim exactly as the artifacts were, which were a simple round shape with a gradual radius on the edge, rather than the Shakuhachi styled flat edge found on some modern flutes. This gives you a very smooth, soft, wind-free tone. My standard woods are walnut and cherry, which gives you a beautiful, durable, and sweet sounding flute. I also build these using exotic woods, such as tulip wood, cocobolo, Hawaiian koa, zebrawood, padauk, East Indian rosewood, African blackwood, pink ivory, olivewood, ebony, bocote, mesquite, bois d’ arc, bois de rose and others. These exotic woods incur an upcharge from $50 to $250 per flute. Please inquire if interested.
